The second release of the secret stealth cuvées is now available.

A special Cuvée Rare bottling of 1993 CH Sonoma Chardonnay was produced that has been designated "Cuvée Le Charles."

Cuvée Le Charles will be the last wine produced from the Charles Heintz vineyard located on the Sonoma Coast west of Dutton Ranch.

This Stealth Cuvée is the first in a series of bottlings dedicated to the

"Secret Society of Kalinites."

Dr. Charles Ginther was a volunteer Kalinite who helped make and bottle Kalin Wines for over fifteen years—when he was not occupied with biotechnology. "Le Charles" and his wife Lee are now on the staff of UCLA Medical Center.

Each bottle of this Cuvée Rare series carries a gold "Cuvée Le Charles" emblem.


1993 CUVÉE LE CHARLES

SONOMA CHARDONNAY

 

Vineyard:

The grape source is Charles Heintz Vineyard located on the crest of a steep hillside on the Sonoma Coast. The vineyard is surrounded by Gravenstein apple orchards and is planted with an old low-yielding, Burgundian clone of Chardonnay. The cool coastal climate, combined with limestone and shale sub-soil, results in yields of 1-1/2 to 2 tons per acre of exceptional quality fruit.

Winemaking and Cellar Practice:

A special selection of grapes was hand picked and sorted, crushed and pressed. The juice was fermented for eleven months in new French oak barrels. The wine was racked, clarified by bentonite fining, and bottled sur lie in August 1994.

Characteristics:

"Le Charles" loved nutty, rich, terroir-driven, Meursault style Chardonnay. For his last vintage at Kalin, we have produced the kind of wine "Le Charles" liked. The scents and flavors of this wine emanate from the surrounding Gravenstein apple orchards, the marine fogscape of the Sonoma Coast, and the shale and limestone terroir. The flavors and aromas are reminiscent of freshly baked apple tart, ground cinnamon, roasted almonds, etc. The unusually favorable fruit-acid structure of this cool climate wine will allow the sustained development of bottle complexity.  

Please note:  This wine has been bottled without filtration to retain the essence of individual vineyard and vintage characteristics. With bottle age, unfiltered white wines will develop a light deposit and should be served with care.
